Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75607

This specimen was lot 75607 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Danzig. 3 Grosze, 1755. August III (of Poland). ANACS EF-45. Variety with 'III' below arms. Impressively detailed for this billion issue with pleasing even gray coloration." This type was struck 1755 only. Off metal strikes exist in silver (KM 103), gold (KM Pn13) and lead (KM Pn14). Three grosze made one tenth of a złoty. The denomination was struck until 1766. The obverse shows the king's monogram, "AR3". Augustus III was the third Saxon to be king of Poland but left Polish affairs to his viceroy while he patronized opera in Dresden.
