Danish West Indies 1763 12 skilling
This specimen was lot 1028 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2018), where it sold for $5,355. The catalog description[1] noted, "Danish West Indies, 12 skilling, 1763, NGC AU 53, finest known in NGC census. Rare in this high of a grade, desirable type with intricate sailing-ship design, very lightly toned around details, muted luster on fields. NGC #4912356-002." This type was struck 1757 and 1763-65 along with a 6 skilling and 24 skilling. Few of the European powers bothered to strike coinage for their colonies in the Caribbean; the economic theory of the day suggested that colonies should be a source of bullion, not a drain.

Specification: 3.25 g, 0.500 fine silver, 24 mm diameter.
