Cyprus 1940 9 piastres
This specimen was lot 33157 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "CYPRUS. 9 Piastres, 1940. London Mint. George VI. PCGS AU-58. Despite some limited signs of circulation, this example displays good charm and appeal." This type was struck 1938 and 1940 and is not rare altho the proofs are expensive. Tho denominated in piastres, it is the same size and weight as a British shilling. Unlike British shillings of the thirties, which were only 0.500 fine, this type is sterling. The next issue (KM 27) of 1947 was copper-nickel and denominated "ONE CYPRUS SHILLING".
Recorded mintage: 800,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.925 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-25.
