Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23408

This specimen was lot 23408 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "CYPRUS. Piastre, 1886. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-53 Brown Gold Shield. A few scattered marks are noted, as well as a stain near the rim on the reverse, but an otherwise wholesome, deep brown example of the type." This type, one-ninth of a shilling, was struck in small numbers 1879-1900 with the late subtype dating 1881-1900. It is not rare in low grade.

Recorded mintage: 227,000.
