Curacao (1819-25) 3 reaal
This specimen was lot 8631 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "CURACAO. 3 Reaals (18 Stivers or Guillotine), ND (1819-25). NGC VF-25; Countermark: EF Standard. Associated with local ordinance of 13 July 1818. Stylized '3' within dentilated circulate indent. Applied to the reverse of a 1/5 cut Spanish Colonial portrait 8 Reales, presumably of Charles IIII(IV). The countermark is boldly applied to a nicely preserved host with even wear and attractive mottled gray patina. Much remaining detail with most of the monarch's name is clear, but without the ordinal for a more accurate attribution. A wholesome example of the type that is pleasant and attractive sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. According to a governmental report dated 20th December 1825, after the government ceased buying Dollars to make small change in 3 and 5 parts, cutting was open to anyone and became a general practice with pieces being readily accepted. The report also goes on to confirm their private token status and that they were permitted for general circulation by convention." The stuiver, a Dutch denomination, traded at six for a real or 48 to the peso before 1801. After 1801, during the British occupation, the stuiver was lowered to 72 to the peso. Curaçao, like many islands in the Caribbean, suffered from a chronic shortage of coin as absentee planters pulled profits out of the islands. In 1838, Dutch gulden of William II were cut into quarters to serve as small change.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
