Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1958

This specimen was lot 1958 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €160 (about US$208 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUBA, République (1902-), AR 5 pesos, 1987. Che Guevara. 5000 p. frappées. Flan poli. (republic of Cuba, silver five pesos of 1987, Che Guevara, 5,000 pieces struck. Proof.)"

This denomination was used for numerous NCLT's in 1987, including KM 149 (Cathedral in Santiago), KM 151 (Cathedral in Caridad del Cobre), KM 153 (Cathedral in Trinidad), KM 155 (40th Anniversary - Expedition of Kon-Tiki), KM 159 (20th anniversary of the death of Che Guevara, shown here), KM 161 (70th Anniversary - Bolshevik Revolution), KM 166 (100th Anniversary of the Souvenir Peso) and KM 326 (abolition of slavery). Greeted by disinterest from the world at large, many are now rare.

Reported Mintage: 5,000 plus 200 proofs.
