Cuba 1938 peso
The first specimen was lot 13114 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Peso, 1938. NGC MS-65. ABC type. Exceptionally choice and RARE in this high grade." The second specimen was lot 34568 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $283. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Peso, 1938. NGC MS-63. Lightly toned." The type was struck in the United States for Cuba 1934-39 using silver dollar blanks. Most were held in government vaults as backing for paper currency and later melted; the original mintage has little bearing on the number of survivors.
