Cuba 1934 peso star
This type was struck in the United States for Cuba 1915-16 and 1932-34 using silver dollar blanks. Most were held in government vaults as backing for paper currency and later melted; the original mintage has little bearing on the number of survivors. This date isn't too rare. All 1933's exhibit the "low relief star"; compare with the 1915 peso. This was the last year of issue for the 'star' type. All pesos thereafter were of the portrait or 'ABC' type (KM 22). The second specimen was lot 50327 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $167. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Peso, 1934. NGC MS-63. Star type."
Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.
Specification: 26.73 g, 0.900 fine silver, 0.773 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, 38 mm diameter.
