Croatia is one of the parts of the former Yugoslavia. It obtained its independence in 1991-92 after fending off Serbian attacks. This five kuna featuring the European brown bear was introduced in 1993. The most recent date listed in the SCWC is 2017. Two reverses were used; this one, noting the bear as a "MRKI MIEDVJED" and KM 23, with the bear labeled as "URSUS ARCTOS", its Latin name. The reverses alternated. As of December 2022, US$1 = 6.92 kuna, making this coin worth about US$0.72. In January 2023, Croatia joined the euro, rendering this currency obsolete.
