Costa Rica 1916 2 colones
This specimen was lot 32661 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2 Colones 1916-(P) MS63 NGC, Philadelphia mint. A scarce date with a mintage of only 5,000, choice for the assigned grade. It is noted that an MS64 example sold in our April 2017 auction, one year ago, for $1,880 (including buyer's premium)." This type was struck for Costa Rica in 1897, 1900 and 1915-26. A similar design featuring the bust of Christopher Colombus appeared on the gold five, ten and twenty colones, all of which are much scarcer than the denomination shown here. Costa Rica officially switched from the peso to the colon in 1897, which currency was reformed again in 1917 and 1920.
Recorded mintage: 5,000.
Specification: 1.55 g, 0.900 fine gold, .045 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
