Corvey in 1789, to the east of Paderborn on the Weser river

This specimen was lot 629 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,702.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Corvey. Taler, 1718. Maximilian von Horrich (1714-21). NGC MS-63. Highest certified specimen. Toned with iridescent golden hues. Sharply struck and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." The abbey of Corvey, annexed by Nassau in 1803, issued a long series of thalers in the seventeenth century, all too rare to have photos in the SCWC. This one is not so rare but the SCWC lists only an issue for MDCCXVII but this specimen is clearly dated MDCCXVIII.
