from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 1294

The early years of Argentine independence were torn by struggles between the centralists in Buenos Aires and regionalists in La Rioja, Cordoba, Salta and elsewhere who even issued their own coinage. This specimen was lot 1294 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cordoba, Argentina, 4 reales, 1847, encapsulated NGC AU 55. Unflawed and with deep toning all over, hint of underlying luster, second finest known in NGC census. NGC #2713825-013. Acquired from Alberto 'Coco' Derman in 1975." This type is noted for 1846-51. The Cordoba mint issued silver coins in all denominations from ¼ real to the eight reales. Many varieties exist and some are abundant.
