This specimen was lot 1009 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $14,950. The catalog description[1] noted, "1838 R 8 escudos. Rioja mint. AU-58 (NGC). Mountain, crossed flags and cannons below, legends with CONFEDERADA and date around/central arms with radiant sun and flags, legends around. Choice medium gold with rich orange highlights at the rims, abundant cartwheel lustre. Fully struck at centers and marvelously preserved. Apparently at least the equal of the Karon coin, finer than the Newcomer coin, and very desirable. This date called 'rara' (rare) in Calico. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type struck 1838 and 1840 only and rare, tho less so than the Rosas portrait design which preceded (KM A9) and followed (KM 14) it.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
