Copiapo 1865 peso

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71284

This specimen was lot 71284 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $284. The catalog description^[1] noted, "CHILE. Copiapo. Peso, 1865. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. A restrike of siege coinage, issued during the Blockade of Puerto de Caldera. A well engraved example of the type with no points of design weakness, and endowed with a grayish brown tone." All or nearly all the known specimens are restrikes along with the Copiapo 50 centavos.
