Constance in 1803, on its annexation by Baden, from Putzger's atlas

This specimen was lot 959 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,281 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KONSTANZ, STADT, Taler 1539. RR Hübsche Patina, winz. Randfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Sincona 6, Zürich 2012, Nr. 736. (Germany, city of Constance, thaler of 1539. Rare, handsome patina, small edge defects, very fine.)"

Constance is a town on the shores of the lake of the same name. Though it has always been surrounded by Swiss territory, it was never part of the Swiss Confederation. Originally ecclesiastical territory, the town wrested its independence during the Reformation and maintained it until Napoleon handed it to the Grand Duchy of Baden. This type was struck 1537-39 and 1541, and is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-9160; Nau 99.
