This specimen was lot 2114 in Sincona sale 13 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 1,850 CHF (about US$2,393 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "DEUTSCHLAND, Konstanz, Stadt, Goldgulden o. J. (1531-36). Titel Maximilian I. Sehr schön." Constance is a town on the shores of the lake of the same name. Though it has always been surrounded by Swiss territory, it was never part of the Swiss Confederation. Originally ecclesiastical territory, the town wrested its independence during the Reformation and maintained it until Napoleon handed it to the Grand Duchy of Baden.
