This type was struck at Medellin 1924-30. It and the matching 2½ pesos replaced the "minero" type issued 1913-19. It is among the last gold coins issued in Colombia for circulation. This specimen was lot 122 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $345. The catalog description[1] noted, "Medellin, Colombia, 5 pesos, 1927, encapsulated NGC MS 64+. Muted luster and toning, practically no marks, should be MS 65 in our opinion." Broken punches turned the "MEDELLIN" mintmark into "MFDFLLIN".

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .235 troy oz AGW (same standard as a British sovereign).
