Colombia H3049-30650r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30650 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Estados Unidos gold 20 Pesos 1868-MEDELLIN AU50 NGC, Medellin mint. From a short-lived series, this offering possesses deeply-patinated surfaces in an olive-gold color and russet tone that gathers around the peripheral elements. A number of grade-limiting abrasions cover each side, but the central images are well-styled, particular[l]y across the obverse portrait. Very desirable at this certified level of preservation." This type was struck at Bogotá 1862-77, Medellin 1867-72 and Popayán 1863-78. Despite the steady issue, the type is rare and expensive.

Recorded mintage: 7,984.

Specification: 32.26 g, 0.900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 142.2.
