This type was struck 1823-36 at Popayán and 1823-25 at Bogotá. This type is fairly common. This specimen was lot 216 in Sedwick sale 9 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $1,392.65. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, Colombia, 1 escudo, 1831RU, encapsulated NGC MS-63. Choice and lustrous, slight but typical weakness in centers, still the finest known specimen graded by NGC. For comparison, an MS-62 sold in Ponterio in April of 2009 for $391. Dan Sander 3/80. Dr. Frank Sedwick collection of Colombian Republic gold coins."
