This specimen was lot 23411 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1831-RS Bogotá, MS61 NGC, fully lustrous with well-struck details and no flan laminations. Scarce early date in mint state." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
