This type was struck 1822-38 at Popayán and Bogotá. This type is one of the commonest gold coins of South America but the recent rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 248 in Sedwick sale 9 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, Colombia, 8 escudos, 1830UR, encapsulated NGC AU-55. Nicely struck and lustrous, just a hint of wear on the high points. Roberto Muhlenkamp 8/78. Dr. Frank Sedwick collection of Colombian Republic gold coins."
