The first specimen was lot 16593 in the Whittier sale (Heritage auction 410, Long Beach, June 2006) where it sold for $575. The catalog description noted[1], "Ferdinand VII 1/4 Real 1816 Popayán, lightly toned AU, very boldly detailed, natural planchet flaw extending through the coin at one edge. Ex-Ray Johnson Collection." Colonial quarter reales of the "Lions and castles" type are known from the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán mints for 1796-1819 (KM 63, KM 67--this type). Cundinamarca quarter reales of debased silver are known for 1814-15 (KM F2) and 1820-22 (KM 79). Republican quarter reales (KM 85) are known for 1826-36. None are common, particularly in nice condition; the specimen shown sold for twice the estimate. The third specimen was lot 41068 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[2] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, 1816-PN. Popayan Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-64. Variety with wide reeded border. A stunningly bright and fresh near-Gem. Struck on a full planchet with a remarkably frosty finish that attests to the coin's uncirculated nature. Bested only by a single example graded MS-65. This interesting one-year issue uses the traditional Spanish colonial types, yet appears to have been struck by Colombian patriots after 1820, following the decisive defeat of the Spanish royalists at the Battle of Boyacá in 1819. This is hinted at by the visible "1/2" overdate seen on some examples. From the EMO Collection."
