Colombia 1815-Pn FR 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 32169 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia, Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1815 Pn-FR AU53 PCGS, Popayán mint. Choice for the designation, with highly lustrous surfaces, few contact marks and only slight friction evidence on the higher points. The rarest date of this subtype featuring the "Pn" mintmark, seldom seen in any grade and very desirable in this charming quality." Altho Ferdinand VII's name was used on the obverse legend, it is the bust of Charles IV which appears. This was typical for all of Colombia's coinage in the last years of the colonial era. Assayer FR is recorded for 1815-18. Overdates abound, including an 1815/4.
