This specimen was lot 20390 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $3,965.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1764-JV Nuevo Reino, VF-XF with well-struck details, perhaps cleaned long ago and now nicely toned. Very scarce type featuring the early portrait of the King." This type was struck 1762-71 at Nuevo Reino (KM 41, Bogotá, mintmark "NR"). The neighboring Popayán mint minted eight escudos at the same time but used the bust of Ferdinand VI (KM 38.2, struck 1760-71).
