This specimen was lot 30345 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1766 NR-JV XF Details (Scratches) NGC, Nuevo Reino mint. With limited actual wear and a few small marks on the shield area accounting for the designation. A very decent specimen of this rare rat-nose type, with attractive color." This type was struck 1762-71 at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá, mintmark "NR"). The neighboring Popayán mint minted eight escudos at the same time but used the bust of Ferdinand VI (KM 38.2, struck 1760-71).
