Colombia 1728-S 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 56 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $5,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1728, assayer S to right, rare, NGC XF 40, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Lasser, ex-Santa Fe, Tauler Plate. Bold full shield (well centered) with full •S• to right, full cross-and-tressure with hint of doubling, clear 728 date preceded by (RE)X in legend (the norm for this assayer), rich gold color, desirable pedigree, same obverse as for the 1728/7 shown in Restrepo (but clean-date 1728 not listed). Pedigreed to the Lasser Collection and to the Leu Numismatik Auction 80 of May 2001 (lot 905), also to the Santa Fe Collection (Sedwick Auction 10, lot 64) and Plate Coin 289 on page 291 of Rafel Tauler's Oro Macuquino (2011)." This type was struck for Philip IV 1701, 1707-43, 1747-48 (some of the early dates were struck in the name of Charles II, as if mint officials were trying to avoid taking sides in the War of the Spanish Succession). Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.76 grams.
