Colombia 1672-NR R 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 48 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, Charles II, assayer R ABOVE denomination II to right (1672 only), very rare, NGC MS 64, finest known in NGC census. Bold but slightly off-center cross-and-tressure, nice full shield with part of king's name CARO(LVS) outside weak but certain R-II to right (not noted on label but a die-match with a clearly dated 1672 example, and no other dates known with that arrangement), lightly toned, minimal luster for assigned grade." This type was struck 1667-93 for Charles II. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
