Aureo sale 242, lot 127

This coin was lot 127 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 6,500 € (about US$10,092 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Felipe IV (1621-1665). 1665. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. PoRS. 8 reales. Extraordinario ejemplar con todos los datos visibles. Muy bella. Rarísima así. EBC. (Philip IV (1621-65), Nuevo Reino mint, eight reales of 1665. Extraordinary example with all the dates visible. Very beatuiful, exceedingly rare, extremely fine.)"

The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1651-65 but is now rare. As is typical of cobs, the majority lack legible dates. The Cartagena mint, during its brief period of operation, struck some in 1655; these are very rare. The production of cobs continued sporadically into the 1740's. It was superseded by milled pillar coinage.

Recorded mintage: Unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-6577, KM 7.1; Cal. 541.
