Colombia 1645-NR R 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 42 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1645, assayer not visible (R) to right, mintmark NR to left, rare. AU with contrasting sediment in crevices, bottom tips of 45 of date visible outside of full cross-and-tressure, full •N•R and king's ordinal IIII to left of full shield, minor doubling throughout." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
