Colombia 1639-NR A 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 40 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip IV, assayer not visible (A below mintmark NR to left), dots outside ends of cross (1639), rare, NGC AU 55 double struck, "top pop." Off-center strike but with full cross showing clear dots outside the ends of the cross (attributable to the year 1639 only within this type, for which this coin is tied with one other for finest in NGC census), the shield also full but doubled, with bold denomination •II• to right, rich gold color with evidence of minor die-rust." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period.
