Colombia (1751-52)-FS S 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 29575 in Heritage sale 3040 (Long Beach, April 2015), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VI gold Cob 4 Escudos ND (1751-52) AU50 NGC, Santa Fe mint, Well preserved with little actual wear and attractive orange toning. Struck over a smallish flan as frequently seen so date is not apparent. The bold 4/8 denomination on the obverse and the style of the ribbons on the reverse allow to assign it to the 1751-1752 period per Restrepo's detailed study. A good representative of this very rare type, desirable despite the lack of a clear date." This type is listed for 1747-56 with all dates marked as rare. Milled coinage of gold commenced in 1756.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW.
