Cologne 1759 1/4 thaler
This specimen was lot 4234 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,280 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖLN, ERZBISTUM, Clemens August von Bayern, 1723-1761. 1/4 Ausbeutetaler 1759, Bonn oder Koblenz. Viertel Bergtaler, geprägt aus westfälischem Feinsilber, auf die Erneuerung der Bergwerke und die Wiederaufnahme des Ramsbecker Bergbaus. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 63 (6320008-014). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Feine Tönung, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus fürstlichem Besitz. (archbishopric of Cologne, Clement August of Bavaria, 1723-61, one quarter mining thaler of 1759, Bonn or Koblenz mint. Quarter mining taler, minted from Westphalian fine silver, on the resumption of mining in Ramsbeck. Graded NGC MS-63, very scarce in this quality, cabinet example, fine toning, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
A thaler (Dav-2175) was also issued on this occasion. Clement August was the last Wittelsbach archbishop of Cologne; his death in 1761 ended 178 years of continuous rule by that family.
