Cologne H3064-30864r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30864 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Cologne. Sede Vacante Taler 1761 AU55 NGC. One-year type. Obv. St. Peter with cross shield on clouds. Rev. Mary with child surrounded by three magi. A highly elusive issue, better struck than most, with significant original gleam in the fields and light pastel toning accents over both sides." This type marked the interregnum between Clemens August of Bavaria (1723-61) and Maximilian Friedrich of Konigsegg-Rothenfels (1761-84). Clement August was the last Wittelsbach archbishop of Cologne; his death in 1761 ended 178 years of continuous rule by that family.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2176; KM 159.
