Cologne 1611 thaler Dav-5160
This specimen was lot 3968 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €650 (about US$851 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖLN, STADT, Reichstaler 1611, mit Titel Rudolfs II. R Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Sal. Oppenheim, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 313, Osnabrück 2018, Nr. 3720 und Exemplar der Auktion Kölner Münzkabinett 59, Köln 1993, Nr. 654. (Germany, city of Cologne, thaler of 1611, in the name of Rudolf II. Scarce, very fine.)"
This thaler was issued not by the archbishop, but by the city, which had expelled the archbishop in 1288. Several types exist for 1611, including Dav-5157, -5157A and -5160A (a klippe version of the thaler shown here). All are rare.
