Künker sale 263, lot 979

This specimen was lot 979 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖLN, STADT Reichstaler 1602, mit Titel Rudolfs II. Seltener Jahrgang. Etwas Belag, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Cologne, thaler of 1602, in the name of Rudolf II. Rare date, some deposits, very fine.)"

The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. This type of 1602 and 1611, issued by the city, is scarce.
