Cologne (1620-30) 2 thaler
This specimen was lot 157 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖLN, STADT, Doppelte Talerklippe o. J. (um 1620). Doppelte Dreikönigstalerklippe. Die Heiligen Drei Könige stehen nebeneinander v. v. in ihren Händen je ein Lilienstab und ein Geschenk, im Vordergrund das Kölner Stadtwappen//Acht Personen stehen v. v. in einem Schiff auf bewegten Wellen. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der westfälischen Privatsammlung „Mehrfachportraits auf Münzen und Medaillen". (Germany, city of Cologne, undated double klippe thaler, circa 1620. Obverse: the Three Kings stand together holding staffs with the city arms below; reverse: eight people stand aboard a ship. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)
Auf der Rückseite des vorliegenden Stückes steht in der Mitte die heilige Ursula mit gefalteten Händen, in der Brust steckt ein Pfeil, an ihrer linken Seite ist Prinz Ätherius, eine Klappmütze auf dem Kopf, die Hände auf der Brust über einem Palmzweig gekreuzt. Die Person zur Rechten Ursulas trägt die päpstliche dreifache Krone und hält in der linken Hand einen Doppelkreuzstab. Der Legende nach soll dies der heilige Cyriakus sein; die Geschichte weiß nichts von einem solchen Papst. An den Ecken befindet sich je eine Jungfrau aus dem Gefolge, in den Zwischenräumen noch drei Köpfe sichtbar. (On the reverse of the present piece, St. Ursula stands in the middle with her hands folded, an arrow stuck in her chest, and on her left is Prince Aetherius, a cap on his head, his hands crossed on his chest over a palm branch. The person to Ursula's right wears the papal triple crown and holds a double cross staff in his left hand. According to legend, this is said to be Saint Cyriacus; history knows nothing of such a pope. At each corner there is a maiden from the entourage, and three heads are still visible in the gaps.)"
The SCWC lists an undated double thaler (KM 384) with "The Three King's standing behind oval city arms in baroque frame" but no photo. It is likely to be the round version of this klippe. A triple thaler (Dav-LSA266) and a six ducats (Fr-758) also exist.
