Cologne 1569 thaler Dav-9155
This specimen was lot 301 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$724 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Köln, Stadt, Taler 1569, Köln. Mit dem Titel Maximilians II. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, city of Cologne, thaler of 1569, struck in the name of Maximilian II. Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Attractively toned.)"
The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. This type of 1568-74, issued by the city, not the archbishop, is the only reasonably available thaler from this locale during the sixteenth century.
