Cologne 1569 thaler Dav-9129
This specimen was lot 52225 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Cologne. Taler, 1569. Deutz Mint. Salentin von Isenburg. PCGS EF-45. This charming example is fully struck and retains rich appeal, despite some limited time in circulation. Good luster is retained, and much charm is preserved, making this a Taler that is certain to capture many bids." This is one of three thalers issued in Cologne in 1569; Dav-9128 shows St. Peter facing left while Dav-9155 has the imperial eagle on the reverse. This is the middle one in price. A double thaler (Dav-9127) also exists. The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. However, he did not rule Cologne itself, which had managed to make itself a free city.
