The first specimen was lot 45606 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/2 Centavo, 1883-So. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-63 Brown." This type was struck 1883-94. It is rather scarce in nice condition. It superseded a copper-nickel type (KM 148) that was probably too costly to produce.
Recorded mintage: 714,000 including an 1883/73 overdate.
Specification: 3 g, copper, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-148a.
