This coin was lot 9251 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $1035. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Peso, 1883. Flat top '3.' Coin alignment. Minted in 1925-26 and most were melted down in 1927. VERY SCARCE. Dipped, prooflike BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." The regular 1883 issue, with a mintage of 1,397,000, has a round top 3 and is common.
Recorded mintage: 149,000 with most melted down as noted above.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.
