This specimen was lot 2887 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,006. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile. 8 Escudos, 1841-So IJ. Liberty as Pallas Athene standing at altar. Reverse: Arms. Obverse planchet defect and scratches. Cleaned. About Extremely Fine." This magnificent, popular and expensive coin comes in two subtypes; this one, with a reeded edge, and KM 104.2, which has the month of issue stamped in the edge. The reeded edge type was struck 1839-43 and the lettered edge type 1843-45.
