This specimen was lot 1520 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE: Republic, AR 1/2 real, 1841-So, assayer IJ, two-year type, lightly toned, NGC graded MS63." The specimen shown is one of a type minted in Santiago, Chile, 1841-42. The design, with a condor tearing the chains of slavery, is also found on one, two and eight reales coins of the period. This design is very popular with collectors and brings quite a bit more than the rather low catalog values. Chile converted to decimal coinage in the 1850's.
Recorded mintage: 16,000.
Specification: 1.6 g, 0.902 fine silver, 17 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-98.3.
