Chile SB118-20078r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20078 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Peso, 1818-SoFD. NGC AU-55. Third finest graded at NGC with only one piece in mint state on the census. A handsome example with somewhat prooflike surfaces but a trifle too busy to make mint state. Struck very slightly off center. It appears to be the 1818/7 overdate at first glance but the action around the final "8" is possibly the result of die clash. Sharply struck, lustrous and quite attractive. From the Alex Siegel Collection. Ex: Tarapaca Collection." This issue, the "volcano peso," is one of the most popular South American crowns. It was struck regularly between 1817 and 1834 in some numbers but is hotly pursued in auctions. It is the first coin to bear the word "peso." Colonial eight reales were commonly called pesos in everyday usage but are marked "8 R." The 1817-FJ is the most frequently encountered of the series. The volcano design also appears on silver half, one and two reales of 1833-34.

Recorded mintage: 371,000 (including the 1818/7 overdate).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW, 39.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-82.2.
