Chile 1818-So 1/4 real
This specimen is one of a series struck 1796-1818 in Santiago, Chile, during the reign of Ferdinand VII. The opening of an enlarged Casa de Moneda in 1805 allowed the increase in mintages and this type is not rare. This particular date is recorded as having been struck by the patriot regime after independence. A hoard of these is known and this date appears in high grade with some frequency. The second specimen was lot 22133 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1818/6-So. NGC MS-62. RARE overdate. Lightly toned with attractive luster."
Recorded mintage: 403,000.
Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver, .024 troy oz ASW.
