Sedwick sale 34, lot 1060
Sed34-1060r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1060 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 1 real, Ferdinand VII transitional (bust of Charles IV, legend FERDIN . VII over CAROLVS . IIII), 1809/8 FJ, rare, NGC MS 62 ("top pop"). Rare variety with clear FERDIN . VII over CAROLVS . IIII (not stated on label) and overdate 9/8, sharply struck (also well centered) and highly lustrous, tied with one other for finest in NGC census." This type, struck 1808-17 for Ferdinand VII with the bust of the abdicated Charles IV, is somewhat scarce. This variety, with one king's name punched over another, is very scarce, verging on rare. Likely a die from 1808 was reworked. Ordinary overdates 1809/8 and 1809/1798 are also reported. The bust of Charles IV was recycled for the two reales but an imaginary bust was used for the eight reales and eight escudos.

Recorded mintage: 29,000 for all varieties.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15217 (overdate), Cal-664; KM-65.
