This specimen was lot 23404 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1767-Inverted A, AU50 NGC, lustrous surfaces with bold details and one planchet lamination on the King's hair. Rare variety with the inverted A instead of J assayer." This type was issued 1764-72 and is rare. With the exception of a hoard of 1750-51 four and eight escudos found some years ago, Chilean gold coinage is rare prior to the 1770's.
