This specimen was lot 12091 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $2,468. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1766-J. NGC VF-20. Charles III (1760-88). Rat nose." It was one of a series struck 1764-72 during the reign of Charles III. It bears Charles' name and the youthful "ratnose" bust. It is not until the appearance of the standard bust type (KM 27) in 1772 that eight escudos become remotely affordable.

Recorded mintage: 23,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
