Chekiang ND (1899) 50 cents Y-54
Chekiang (or Zhejiang) is a densely populated, coastal province immediately south of Shanghai. The first Chekiang mint was located in the capital Hangchow. It opened in 1896 but closed by the turn of the century. Other mints established in the early 1900’s initially struck copper cash coins.
The specimen shown was lot 60021 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $83,650. The catalog description[1] noted, " CHINA. Chekiang. 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents), ND (ca. 1899). Quite remarkable, while RARE as a type, this coin is EXTREMELY RARE in this choice state of preseveration. Well struck, toned with prooflike surfaces. The finest certified of this type by NGC. (珍稀度☆☆☆) 非常稀少的品種,高品相的極為罕見。製作精美,有包漿而近乎鏡面般的完美。NGC鑑定評分最高的一枚。NGC MS-65. Ex: Stack's October 1977 Auction, lot#847.
