Chekiang (or Zhejiang) is a densely populated, coastal province immediately south of Shanghai. The first Chekiang mint was located in the capital Hangchow. It opened in 1896 but closed by the turn of the century. Other mints established in the early 1900’s initially struck copper cash coins.
The specimen shown was lot 60024 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $1314. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Chekiang. 7.2 Candareens (10 Cents), ND (ca. 1898-99). Lightly toned and very attractive. 輕度而良好的包漿。 NGC AU-55. Ex: The Frank Robinson Collection."
