The specimen shown was lot 21044 in the Ponterio sale 165 (Hong Kong, April 2012), where it sold for $2032. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Chekiang. 10 Cash, ND (ca.1903-06). NGC MS-64. Choice and very original surfaces." Chekiang (or Zhejiang) is a densely populated, coastal province immediately south of Shanghai. The first Chekiang mint was located in the capital Hangchow. It opened in 1896 but closed by the turn of the century. This undated type was struck in numerous varieties at the beginning of the twentieth century. The varieties recognized by the SCWC are:
- Y49: Ball in circle in center;
- Y49a: brass version of Y49;
- Y49.1: Rosette at center and large Manchu "Boo" at left, medal alignment;
- Y49.1a: brass version of Y49.1, shown here;
- Y49.2: Small Manchu "Boo" at left, coin alignment;
- Y49.3: Rosette at center and small Manchu word at left;
- Y49.4: Dragon without ball in center circle.
